Telangana explores possible partnership with Hutti Gold Mines

Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has directed officials of Singareni Collieries Company Limited to explore the possibility of setting up a joint venture with Karnataka government owned Hutti Gold Mines for future gold mining projects.

The direction was given during Bhatti Vikramarka visit to the Hutti and UTI gold mines in Raichur district of Karnataka. He inspected mining, mineral processing and gold refining operations during the second day of his visit to the regions gold mining areas.

The proposed partnership is still at the exploration stage. No final joint venture agreement has been announced so far. The immediate focus is on examining whether the technical capabilities of the two public sector organisations can be combined for future mineral projects.

Why Singareni and Hutti Gold Mines could work together

Bhatti Vikramarka said Hutti Gold Mines has extensive experience in gold exploration, mining, processing and refining. Singareni, meanwhile, has long experience in large scale mining and mineral operations.

The Deputy Chief Minister suggested that bringing these capabilities together could help improve exploration and mining outcomes and contribute to higher domestic gold production.

The proposal also reflects a wider effort to use the technical strength of public sector mining companies to develop domestic mineral resources rather than relying heavily on imported gold.

Focus on domestic gold production

Bhatti Vikramarka said gold is strategically important for the country and that government owned mining companies should play a larger role in scientifically exploring domestic gold reserves.

Higher domestic production could help India increase the use of locally available mineral resources. However, the actual impact on gold imports will depend on the scale of future discoveries, the economics of extraction and the ability to commercially develop identified resources.

Hutti mines produce up to four kilograms of gold a day

During the visit, officials briefed the Deputy Chief Minister about the operations of Hutti Gold Mines. According to the briefing, the project currently produces around 2 to 4 kilograms of gold per day.

Bhatti Vikramarka inspected the production unit, mineral processing centre and electro winning unit to understand the complete production chain from ore extraction to gold recovery.

Devadurga gold copper block adds strategic importance

The proposed cooperation is particularly relevant because Singareni has been working on mineral exploration in the Devadurga gold copper block in Karnataka.

The Devadurga block is located close to the Hutti Gold Mines area. Bhatti Vikramarka has directed Singareni officials to expedite exploration and make use of Hutti Gold Mines expertise and modern exploration technology to assess the quantity and quality of mineral deposits.

Officials have also been asked to prepare plans for the next phase of activities so that work can move forward quickly if exploration produces encouraging results.

Deputy CM inspects underground and open cast mining operations

During his Karnataka tour, the Deputy Chief Minister also visited the UTI open cast and underground gold mines. He interacted with officials and sought details about mining technology, ore extraction, transportation arrangements and worker safety.

The visit gave the Telangana delegation an opportunity to study the technical and operational practices used in gold mining and processing before considering future cooperation.

What a Singareni Hutti partnership could mean

If a joint venture is eventually formed, it could provide a framework for sharing technical expertise, exploration capabilities, manpower and mineral processing knowledge between the two public sector organisations.

However, any assessment of commercial viability would require detailed geological studies, exploration results, project economics, regulatory approvals and a clear investment structure. The current proposal should therefore be viewed as an exploration of collaboration rather than a confirmed mining partnership.

Potential significance for Indias mining sector

A structured collaboration between two government backed mining companies could create an institutional model for developing gold and other mineral assets through domestic expertise.

For India, the significance would depend on whether additional economically viable gold resources are identified and successfully brought into production. Exploration success alone does not guarantee commercial mining because ore quality, depth, extraction costs, infrastructure and environmental requirements all influence project economics.

What happens next

The immediate priority is to examine the feasibility of cooperation between Singareni and Hutti Gold Mines and accelerate exploration activities in the Devadurga gold copper block.

Further developments would be required before a formal joint venture could be considered, including technical assessments, commercial evaluation, approvals and agreement on the structure and responsibilities of the participating organisations.

Key takeaway

Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has asked Singareni officials to explore a possible joint venture with Karnataka government owned Hutti Gold Mines for future gold mining projects. The proposal aims to combine Singareni mining capabilities with Hutti expertise in gold exploration, processing and refining. The two organisations have not announced a final joint venture yet, while exploration of the Devadurga gold copper block remains an immediate focus.
